Is chemistry class different when taken at a religious high school? At Highland View Academy (7DA) the facts are still the facts but now there is a reason and a why to the chemistry.
Along with conventional chemistry goals like memorizing ions, learning how to balance an equation there were also "Distinctly Seventh Day Adventist " learning objectives. The syllabus promises that the course will:
4. ...point out that God’s perfect universe in general, and the Earth and its resources, in particular, have undergone degeneracy as the result of sin and its effects.
5. ...develop in the students traits such as honesty, curiosity, thoughtfulness, openness, objectivity... which are essential in being a good scientist (chemist), as well as a better human being.
6. ...emphasize that the basic laws and principles of chemistry show that God is a God of order and exactness...
The teacher for this course (Ophelia M. Barizo) really thought things out. As a secular school teacher of 10 years I found reading this syllabus interesting, refreshing, inspiring. The complete syllabus is a .pdf here.
