The message in this 1947 teacher training film is simple: you'll have less class management issues if the class is on your side. To do this you need to teach well: (1)Convince them that the material is worth learning. (2) Demonstrate your skills at taking them from Point A to Point B. (3) Show that you have their best interests at heart (4) Demonstrate to them that if they do your activities they will see results in their ability. Those things actually come first. Only then do we add a final point, an additional one, not the main point: be vigilant for misbehavior but respond to it with something other than tyranny.
Twelve minute video here. Time has not dimmed its truth.
Oh, did I mention this is my first year teaching summer school? It's tough. This video is timely for me.
UPDATE: I actually thought about the video twice today, while I was teaching. It's really a simple video but it sets a great tone.
