I reached some kind of critical mass of NYC gaga today, the following seen all in the the 90 second traverse of a single block:
1) a halfsome dozen art school students squatting next to a sign that offered "Crayon portrait and short story. Free."
2) An electric guitar duo, blasting a sidewalk audience of 20 people via battery powered eight inch amps. The two girls had a loud Ramones thing going, passing out postcards that billed this as their only New York show. They were called Valentine something-or-other (I can't remember now).
3) Chess games on overturned boxes, in a quantity so large that I had to detour around them to get into the subway. No sign, no claim of any particular reason for the chess.
At which point I retreated for a long overdue session at the laundrymat.
